One of the busiest international airports in the world – Beijing Capital International Airport – that had a 100 million passengers in 2018, has selected Xsight Systems' Foreign Object Debris (FOD) Detection solution for installation on its East Runway. The system’s AI algorithm detects and assesses potential threats on the runway.
According to website PR Newswire, the system, called RunWize, uses sophisticated image and radar-processing algorithms based on artificial intelligence to monitor runways continuously in order to detect debris or hazards, including birds.
Developed in Tel Aviv, Israel, RunWize is already in operation in the following airports: Boston Logan International Airport, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Tel Aviv Ben-Gurion International Airport and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport, as well as the Israeli Air Force.
Foreign Object Debris (FOD) and environmental threats on the runway, such as birds, cost the global aviation industry nearly $12 billion each year, according to the PR Newswire report, and systems such RunWize are invaluable in the mitigation against such hazards.
